The lithic assemblages come from the Freshwater Bed and can probably be assigned to HoIIb-HoIIc. They are all made on flint from the river gravel and consist of simple cores, flakes and flake tools. The absence of handaxes, led to the term ‘Clactonian’ for this non-handaxe industry (Warren 1926; Breuil 1932). The core working consists of single platform and alternating platform techniques deployed according to the evolving state of the core and is typical of other British Lower Palaeolithic sites (Ashton & McNabb 1994). The flake tools consist of notches and occasionally denticulates and simple scrapers. The site is famous for the Clacton spear, which also came from the Freshwater Beds (Warren 1911a, b; Oakley et al. 1977).
